The Project:
Sheet mask photography for web and social media
I photographed Kibon Beauty's sheet mask line for their website and social media. The brand makes plant-based skincare with a focus on LIPOBUTY™ delivery technology and botanical ingredients. They needed product photography that could work across multiple channels while showing what makes their masks different from standard sheet mask products. The project covered three types of images: e-commerce photos for their online store, styled product shots, and detailed texture photography. Each category served a specific purpose while maintaining a consistent visual approach throughout the collection.
Working from Vancouver, I focused on capturing the physical qualities that set these masks apart. Sheet masks present specific challenges for skincare product photography. The translucent material needs to show clearly without looking cheap. The serum has to read as fresh and premium, not oily or messy. Packaging details matter because the brand emphasizes sustainability credentials like FSC certification and soy-based inks. The photography needed to make all of these elements legible and appealing without falling into typical beauty category clichés.
The Execution:
E-commerce clarity with multi-channel flexibility
The e-commerce images prioritized clarity and accuracy. I used high-key lighting with soft diffusion to reveal product details without creating distracting reflections on the foil packaging. The goal was to show exactly what customers would receive: the mask format, the packaging design, and the material quality. I shot detail views that made small typography readable and captured the translucent edges of the mask material. These photos needed to answer basic questions quickly so potential customers could understand the product format at a glance.
For the styled product shots, I built compositions that suggested the botanical science behind the formulations without relying on generic props. The approach balanced clinical precision with warmth. I used controlled specular highlights to show wet surfaces and serum texture clearly. The lighting was consistent across shots so the brand could mix and match images for different marketing needs. Glass vessels and minimal styling added depth without cluttering the frame. Each composition was designed to communicate quality through attention to materials and surfaces rather than through elaborate staging.
Macro texture photography as trust signal
The texture photography required precise control of both lighting and focus. I captured macro views of the mask material showing adherence and serum sheen. Shallow depth of field isolated specific details like the mask's translucent borders or the texture of skin after application. These close views made invisible skincare benefits more tangible by showing the physical interaction between product and skin. I also photographed ingredient elements like aloe pressed to skin, creating visual links to the plant-based formulations without falling back on cliché botanical styling.
Model photography focused on real skin texture and natural presentation. I used high-key, softly diffused lighting that revealed pore-level detail without making skin look artificial. The portraits showed the mask in use from angles that demonstrated fit and material quality. I paid close attention to how light interacted with the wet surface of the mask and the sheen it left on skin. Side profiles and tight framing highlighted the mask's adherence and the translucent edges. The retouching approach kept natural texture visible because the brand's positioning around transparency required authentic representation.
Technical consistency across all image types
The technical approach remained consistent throughout the shoot. I managed reflections carefully on both packaging and wet surfaces. Color accuracy mattered because the photos needed to match across different uses, from web to potential retail or PR applications. I maintained neutral palettes and natural grooming so the focus stayed on product quality and skin response. Each image was captured with enough resolution and clean backgrounds to support flexible cropping for different platform requirements.
The Result:
Cohesive image system supporting multiple brand touchpoints
I delivered a photo collection that included mask-in-use portraits, packaging shots with readable design elements, macro studies of mask material and skin texture, and ingredient vignettes. The images work together as a system. The brand can combine e-commerce clarity with more styled campaign images while maintaining visual consistency. The collection supports their premium positioning by showing material quality, botanical ingredients, and real skin interaction in a way that feels polished but not overly processed.
As a Vancouver product photographer, I've found that this type of beauty product photography requires balancing multiple technical demands at once. Sheet masks need to look premium and scientifically credible while still feeling approachable. Wet surfaces and translucent materials can easily photograph as cheap or messy if lighting and composition aren't tightly controlled. The photography also needs to work hard across different contexts, from quick product page scans to longer social media engagement. The Kibon Beauty collection demonstrates how thoughtful lighting, consistent color management, and attention to material details can create versatile product photography that serves both immediate e-commerce needs and broader brand building.
