The Brief:
Sheet mask photography for multi-platform use
I photographed Kibon Beauty's sheet mask collection for their website and social media. The brand creates plant-based skincare with proprietary delivery technology, and they needed product photography that would work across multiple platforms. Working from Vancouver, I created a mix of e-commerce images, styled product shots, and texture-focused photos that captured both the packaging quality and the product experience.
The project focused on three distinct image types. E-commerce images needed clean presentation with label clarity and accurate color. Styled product shots required minimal compositions that suggested the botanical formulations without cluttering the frame. Texture-focused photos had to show serum richness and mask material in a way that felt tangible but not oversaturated.
The Challenge:
Photographing reflective foil and translucent materials
I approached the sheet mask photography with lighting setups that could handle both reflective foil packaging and translucent wet materials. Foil sachets create specific challenges because harsh lighting produces unreadable glare and cheap-looking reflections. I used broad, diffused light sources to control where reflections appeared while keeping typography sharp and colors true to the actual packaging.
The Execution:
Three lighting approaches for distinct image types
For e-commerce frames, I used high-key lighting with gradient backgrounds to create depth without distraction. The sachets needed to float slightly off pure white to show dimension. Shadows were soft enough to feel premium but defined enough to ground the products. Each frame included deliberate negative space because the brand uses these images with copy overlays.
The styled shots balanced clinical precision with botanical warmth. I kept compositions architectural, using monochrome palettes and minimal props. Glass vessels added refraction and layering without reading as decorative clutter. The goal was to suggest the plant-based formulations through restrained visual cues rather than literal styling.
Texture photography as efficacy proof
Texture photography for skincare requires showing efficacy without exaggeration. I photographed masks emerging from sachets with serum visible on the material, and close-up swatches showing viscosity and sheen. The lighting needed to catch moisture and translucence while avoiding the greasy look that comes from overly specular highlights. Controlled reflections made the serum read as hydrating, and fiber detail in the mask material showed product quality.
The Results:
Versatile assets with consistent brand cohesion
I delivered a photo collection designed for multiple uses. Clean product shots work on e-commerce pages where label legibility and accurate representation matter most. Styled frames with negative space adapt to social posts, email headers, and campaign banners. Texture close-ups function as proof points in paid advertising where brands need to catch attention quickly with tactile detail.
The images maintain consistent color temperature and tonal range across the set. Consistency matters because skincare brands use photos across different channels simultaneously, and visual coherence reinforces premium positioning. Every frame uses restrained whites and greys that match clean beauty aesthetics while keeping the product as the clear focal point.
The Takeaway:
Technical precision that communicates brand values
This project demonstrated how skincare product photography can communicate brand values through technique choices. Diffused lighting and gradient backgrounds support a science-forward feeling. Controlled reflections and minimal styling preserve botanical warmth without sacrificing precision. Texture detail provides sensory evidence that backs up product claims.
If your skincare brand needs product photography that works across e-commerce, social media, and advertising, let's discuss your next shoot.

By capturing these details with high-key lighting and controlled edge fills, the imagery rewards the second look and invites closer inspection, earning saves, shares, and comments on Instagram and TikTok. For product pages, macro shots in the gallery increase dwell time by giving shoppers visual proof of quality, formulation concentration, and ethical sourcing (FSC marks, vegan badges), which builds trust and drives conversion without requiring copy-heavy explanations."
