Dfinite foundation swatch photography comparing lighter and deeper shade formulas side by side

- about this project
The Brief:

Foundation swatch photography for clean beauty launch

I photographed Dfinite's foundation launch to show the difference between their two shade ranges: one formulated for lighter skin tones, another for darker skin tones. The brand needed images that made shade distinctions clear through individual swatches and side by side comparisons. Working from Vancouver as a skincare product photographer, I focused on creating visuals that communicated undertone and depth without the high polish typical in beauty photography. The goal was straightforward: show these foundations as they appear on real skin.

Dfinite positions itself around clean, vegan formulations with a focus on skin health over cosmetic masking. When they moved into complexion products, the photography needed to reflect that same authenticity. Rather than creating swatches that looked airbrushed or artificially smooth, I chose to keep them organic and textured. Skin is not polished in real life, and neither should foundation swatches be when the brand's entire philosophy centers on progressive, honest results.

The Execution:

Accurate color rendering through controlled lighting

The technical approach centered on accurate color rendering and consistent lighting across every frame. I used neutral, even illumination to prevent undertone shifts between images. When photographing foundation swatches, the smallest variation in light temperature or intensity can make a warm toned shade read olive or a cool shade appear pink. For an e-commerce launch where customers are making shade decisions based solely on screen images, that kind of drift creates confusion and returns. I kept the lighting setup identical for each swatch, metering carefully to maintain the same exposure and white balance throughout the session.

I shot each foundation shade separately first, then created comparison frames showing the lighter and darker formulas side by side. The side by side images were important for showing contrast and helping customers understand the actual range between the two products. Each swatch was applied in a natural, finger blended shape rather than a perfect stripe or circle. The edges remained uneven, the application showed variation in density, and the texture stayed visible. These were not flaws to correct in post production. They were intentional choices that showed how the product behaves during real application.

Clean backgrounds and strategic composition

For composition, I worked with clean white backgrounds to eliminate color cast and keep focus on the swatches themselves. The white ground also simplified integration into Dfinite's existing visual system without competing with other design elements. I framed each image with negative space, anticipating how the brand would need to crop for different uses: tight squares for social feeds, vertical formats for mobile product pages, and wider landscape frames for desktop e-commerce. The macro detail was high enough to show finish and edge breakup when zoomed, giving customers a closer look at texture and pigment density.

The retouching philosophy matched the shooting approach: minimal intervention. I corrected for any dust or stray fibers but left skin texture intact. I did not smooth edges, blend transitions, or enhance creaminess artificially. The swatches needed to look exactly as they did in the studio, which is as close as photography can get to how they will look on the customer's own skin. For a clean beauty brand launching foundations, that level of visual honesty supports the larger brand promise around transparency and real results.

The Results:

Multi-platform assets that maintain visual consistency

I delivered a collection of images designed for multiple applications: primary product photos for the online store, detailed texture shots for closer inspection, and comparison modules for shade selection tools. Each file was color profiled and output at resolutions suitable for both web display and potential print use. The consistency across the set meant the brand could mix and match images across their website, email campaigns, and social content without visual mismatch.

Foundation swatch photography for clean beauty brands requires balancing realism with the refinement expected at a premium price point. Dfinite's mid to upper market positioning means customers expect quality in both product and presentation. As a Vancouver product photographer, I have found that images need to feel considered and intentional, even while showing unpolished texture. That balance came through lighting control, thoughtful composition, and a restrained editing approach that enhanced clarity without manufacturing perfection.

The Takeaway:

Photographic honesty as brand alignment

This project reinforced the importance of aligning photographic choices with brand values. For Dfinite, launching foundations with honest swatch imagery was not just about showing color. It was about extending their skin first philosophy into complexion products and building trust with customers who care as much about ingredient integrity as they do about shade accuracy. If you are launching a skincare or beauty line and need product photography that communicates both authenticity and quality, let's talk about how we can build that visual foundation together.
