KEYTH

Sensorial beauty stills with scent-layer atmosphere

- about this project
The Challenge:

Translating sensory experience into product photography for K-beauty brand KEYTH

I photographed four products from KEYTH's body care line: two body washes and two body lotions. KEYTH is a Seoul-based fragrance and body care brand built around the concept of unlocking sensory experiences through layered scent design. The project called for product photography that could communicate texture, scent mood, and ritual without relying on the product being physically experienced first. Working from Vancouver, I needed to create a photo collection that worked equally well for online store pages and brand storytelling across different platforms.

The brand's philosophy centers on unlocking layers, so the photography approach started there. Each product name suggested its own atmosphere rather than a generic beauty aesthetic. I treated the shoot less like catalog documentation and more like building distinct visual worlds that could exist independently while remaining connected through shared technical and stylistic choices. The goal was images that felt immersive and tactile without losing product clarity or becoming overly abstract.

The Execution:

Building atmospheric worlds around each product's distinct identity

For Hypnotic Fog, I worked with diffusion and softness as the primary visual language. Fog became the central element, not just as a literal interpretation of the product name, but as a way to suggest how scent moves through space and settles on skin. The product sits within the fog rather than in front of it, creating depth and a sense of something enveloping. The lighting remained soft and even, ensuring the bottle stayed legible while the atmosphere built around it. The approach gave the image an emotional quality while keeping the product recognizable and properly lit for commercial use.

The body wash Her Apartment required a different treatment. I started with the idea of feminine depth as a layered, intimate space rather than a single visual cue. Water became the connecting element between concept and function. It tied directly to the shower ritual while adding movement, reflection, and a sense of sensuality to the composition. The image includes personal objects like sunglasses and keys, grounding the product in a real moment rather than an idealized beauty shot. The color palette leaned into deep shadows with controlled highlights in blues and yellows, maintaining mood without sacrificing the clarity needed for product pages.

Visual proxies for texture, scent, and sensory qualities

Body care photography presents a specific challenge. Texture, scent, and how a product feels on skin cannot be shown directly. I used visual proxies to suggest those sensory qualities. Fog implied softness and diffusion. Water evoked touch and the sensation of cleansing. Bubbles and droplets added proof of texture and freshness. Light and shadow created depth that suggested emotional layers consistent with KEYTH's unlocking philosophy. These choices translated invisible product benefits into something a viewer could grasp visually within a few seconds.

Each photo was built around controlled reflections and surface treatment. Glass and liquid transparency required careful lighting to avoid glare while preserving material quality. I used soft, diffused light as the foundation, adding subtle directional highlights to sculpt form without overpowering the mood. Selective focus kept attention on the product while allowing surrounding elements to add context and atmosphere. Negative space gave the compositions room to breathe and provided flexibility for cropping across different formats and platform requirements.

The Result:

A scalable visual system that supports commerce and storytelling

The technical approach stayed consistent across all four products. The lighting setups followed the same logic, ensuring the collection felt unified even as individual images expressed different moods. Color grading maintained sensuality and depth while preserving accurate packaging colors and label readability. Retouching focused on cleaning reflections and surfaces without altering the product's true appearance or introducing artificial perfection that would feel disconnected from the brand's tactile, layered identity.

The resulting photo collection supports multiple uses. The images work as main campaign visuals that establish each product's distinct world. They function on product pages where clarity and detail matter for purchase decisions. The atmospheric shots translate well to social platforms where emotional resonance drives engagement. The same photos can adapt to retail partner requirements where packaging accuracy and clean presentation are necessary. The collection provides a scalable visual system rather than isolated pretty pictures.

Holding atmosphere and clarity in productive tension

K-beauty product photography often splits between overly polished catalog work and concept-heavy campaign images that sacrifice product clarity. This project aimed to hold both qualities in tension. The images needed to feel designed and evocative while remaining functional for commerce. That balance came from treating atmosphere and clarity as complementary rather than competing priorities. Fog, water, and layered light created mood. Controlled lighting and precise composition maintained product legibility. The two worked together rather than against each other.

The approach proved especially relevant for a brand like KEYTH, where the product experience is fundamentally sensorial and the differentiation comes from narrative rather than purely functional claims. Standard beauty photography often defaults to high-key white backgrounds or lifestyle shots that follow established visual codes. Neither option fully captured what made these products distinct. As a Vancouver product photographer working with Seoul-based brands, building atmospheric worlds around each product name gave the imagery a specific point of view that matched the brand's philosophy while delivering the commercial clarity required for online retail and performance marketing.

If your product depends on communicating experience, ritual, or mood alongside function, photography needs to do more than document packaging. It needs to give form to what makes someone want to reach for the product in the first place. I work with beauty and wellness brands to create photo collections that balance atmosphere with commercial utility.
